Painted directly in the Étel marina, " Salt White, Purple Wind" draws inspiration from the sailing ship Lola of Skagen and the flocks of birds that crossed the sky each evening at sunset. The blues of the harbor blend with the violets, pinks, and whites of the sky in a painting where the landscape is constructed through the layering of lines, transparencies, and textures. In Étel, at night, the gaze travels far.

The port gradually fills with blues. The facades, the boats, and the quays lose their sharp outlines. Then the sky begins to change color: pink appears in the blues, purple gains ground, and a few whites still catch the light.

It was in this light that Blanc de sel, pourpre de vent was born, painted directly from life in the marina of Étel.

The starting point was Lola of Skagen , a former Danish fishing boat built in 1919, now preserved and sailing as a traditional yacht. Her story is one of the sea, of work, and of travel. Now based in Brittany, Lola retains something very tangible: a hull, rigging, wood, a recognizable silhouette in the harbor.

But what caught the eye was perhaps something else.

Every evening, a flock of birds crossed the sky above the port at sunset. Their passage lasted only a few moments. They appeared in the light, cut their white silhouettes across the sky, then disappeared beyond sight.

These birds have remained in the painting.

They give the scene its movement without becoming its subject. The boat remains there, while the sky seems to pass by.

Color plays a central role in this work. The cool blues of the harbor are traversed by muted violets, mauves, and pinks . In certain places, an almost white or pale yellow light reaches the surface. Nothing is completely uniform: the colors rub against each other, overlap, and reveal traces of the artist's hand.

This method of constructing the image is particularly visible up close. The pencil remains visible beneath and between the layers of tempera and gouache. Some strokes still depict the boat or the landscape; others become almost abstract. A few steps away, the forms come together. As you approach, they begin to disperse again.

This is also what gives painting its tactile dimension.

The landscape is not entirely revealed at first glance. One must search for forms within the texture , rediscover a hull, a line, a bird, a section of the quay. The gaze moves as it would in reality in a port at dusk, when the light no longer allows one to distinguish everything with certainty.

The title was born from this feeling: the white of the salt, the color of the sky, the wind that crosses the port and makes move what seemed motionless.

A painting of Brittany, but above all a specific moment: that when a boat remains in port while the birds continue on their way.

Delivery The artwork is shipped from Paris, mounted on a frame and carefully protected in suitable cardboard packaging for transport.
