The painting originated from an unexpected encounter experienced by the artist during a residency in the Auvergne. Every morning, during her daily run across the fields, a magpie would descend from the same tree to meet her. The bird would follow her with disconcerting familiarity, attempting to land on her head, sometimes tugging at a lock of hair before returning to its perch. A few days later, the same magpie made a striking appearance at the artists' luncheon, drawn as much by the human activity as by the sunlight glinting off the glasses. It even went so far as to try and taste the wine being shared around the table. From this true story was born Free Soul. The magpie is no longer just a bird: it becomes a presence, a character, almost a double. Curious, independent, mischievous, and untamed, it embodies that wild part that remains in each of us despite the habits, rules, and constraints of daily life.
