With Guetteurs du vent , Olga Kataeva-Rochford captures a rare moment of life on board: that moment when attention leaves the task to let itself be surprised by the world.
Two sailors, standing on the deck, scan the horizon through their binoculars. Their gaze sweeps far into the distance, beyond the ship, towards a fleeting apparition: flying fish streaking silently across the air, between sea and sky. Their movements are precise, almost motionless, but everything hinges on the tension in their eyes.
From his series inspired by boarding different types of ships, this linocut evokes those suspended moments of watch, when time expands and the eye, freed from urgency, begins to see differently. What might otherwise go unnoticed suddenly becomes a presence.
The engraved line, direct and structured, affirms the verticality of the figures and the intensity of their focus. The simplicity of black and white, characteristic of linocut, reinforces this reading of the world reduced to its essentials: lines, rhythms, apparitions.
Through this work, Olga Kataeva-Rochford offers an experience of seeing: learning to see what is there, in the simplest reality, and discovering a form of poetry within it. At sea, as elsewhere, sometimes a single moment of attention is enough for the world to shift.
This original linocut is aimed at collectors of contemporary figurative art , lovers of maritime engraving and those sensitive to the poetry of travel, observation and life on board.
