Acrylic on canvas 50 × 60 cm — 2025 Original painting. A textured contemporary painting of London's Docklands, created with acrylic on canvas. Through successive layers of paint, architecture, water, and reflections gradually emerge from a hazy surface, inviting the viewer to approach and seek out the forms hidden within the painting. London Docklands is the first work in a series dedicated to my impressions of London.
I fell in love with this city on my very first visit. I immediately felt a strange, inexplicable familiarity. Even when I only return for a short stopover, London continues to draw me in.
In this painting, I was not trying to represent the Docklands accurately, but rather to capture how the place appeared to me: partially visible, partially erased, constantly changing.
Texture plays a crucial role in the painting. The surface is built up through numerous layers of acrylic, some rough, others scraped, blurred, or almost erased. The image, therefore, does not reveal itself immediately. Forms seem to disappear into a haze, then reappear as the eye travels across the surface.
The gaze thus becomes almost tactile. One feels compelled to approach the canvas, to follow a line, to discover a building, a reflection, or a fragment of the landscape that was almost hidden in the mist. The textures slow the gaze. Instead of receiving the image in its entirety at once, the eye must search for it.
This is an important aspect of my approach. I want the painting to retain something of the experience of a city that never fully reveals itself, where architecture, water, light, and weather conditions constantly alter what one perceives.
London Docklands is therefore not a conventional view of London. It is a painting based on an experience of seeing: fragments of the city gradually emerge through layers of paint, while some forms remain deliberately ambiguous. The more you look, the more there is to discover. Delivery: The artwork is shipped from Paris, mounted on a stretcher frame and carefully protected in a suitable cardboard box.
